Botox® Administration

Since April of 2002, when it gained FDA approval, Botox® has fast become recognized for the many benefits it offers its users. This therapeutic muscle relaxing agent is now recognized as a safe and effective way to treat wrinkles with no long term effects.

What Is Botox®?

Botox® is a purified protein toxin, which is cosmetically used to help soften fine lines and wrinkles in the face. It is derived from the Botulism toxin and manufactured in very minute amounts for cosmetic purposes.

How Does Botox® Work?

Botox is injected into a muscle which blocks the nerve impulse that prevents contraction of the muscle. The muscle weakens, and eventually the wrinkles in the skin gradually soften and often disappear.

How Safe Is Botox®?

Botox® has been used safely in ophthalmology for over 10 years and for wrinkle therapy for over six years. Any possible side effects are temporary.

What Are Possible Side Effects?

Some possible side affects are mild bruising and drooping. A bruise would last a few days and a droop can last one to two weeks. These side effects are not common and are temporary.

How Long Does Botox® Last?

Botox can last four to five months depending on how fast your body metabolizes it.  The effect of Botox can be seen in three to five days and at the most 14 days. If no effect is seen after 14 days, a touch-up will be required.

What Aftercare Instructions Are Necessary? - No laying flat for 4 to 6 hrs.
- No vigorous exercise for 24 hrs.
- No rubbing of the site, however facial exercises are encouraged.

Who Shouldn’t Get Botox®? - Pregnant or nursing mothers
- History of neuromuscular disorders
- Allergy to eggs or Albumin

How Long Does the Procedure Take & Does It Hurt?

The procedure takes approximately five to 10 minutes and slight discomfort will be felt initially for a few seconds. Once the treatment is over there is no discomfort.
